Ben's proposal was chosen out of several for a show designed to run independently alongside the renowned ROOT festival organised by Hull Time based Arts (HTBA), its concept though being firmly located in this years DEEP ROOT agenda. DEEP ROOT was intended as a metaphor for the rigorous research carried out by artists through theory, making and action. Ben's work explored this through a number of works that mimicked the function of pre-existing domestic devices.
They were physical "contrivances" that attempted to act as replacements for their more sophisticated cousins. For example: a bathtub of soup was sacrificed to power a vintage games console and television, while sixty tins of tomatoes powered a room-sized radio.
